Springbrook walks & waterfalls
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify Queensland Parks
Start with a clear section decision: plateau waterfall circuits, Natural Bridge (Numinbah Valley), or Mount Cougal (Currumbin Valley). Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on Queensland Parks and with alerts the morning you leave. Expect cool, wet rainforest conditions on the plateau — Gondwana-heritage forest country, not a dry coastal path.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy / short: Best of All, Goomoolahra, Natural Bridge day arch, Cougal Cascades — high reward, still wet rock.
- Moderate Grade 3: Twin Falls or Purling Brook — pick one serious circuit, not both hard loops.
- Hard / full day: Warrie Circuit only — early start, official status open, turn-around clock.
Stacking two hard walks plus a night valley drive is how first visits fall apart. Pick the table row that matches energy, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

- Grade 3 classics ~4 km
- Short lookouts
- Warrie full-day option
- Always check alerts

Natural Bridge
- Distance
- ~1 km circuit
- Time
- Allow about 1 hour (official); 30–60 min moving by day
- Best for
- Day arch · night glow worms · mixed fitness short wow
Short formed walk to the basalt arch and Cave Creek. By night this is Springbrook’s famous glow-worm experience — different section from the plateau (~30 min drive typical from plateau trailheads). Day and night need different plans.
Walk details →Best of All Lookout
- Distance
- 600 m return
- Time
- Allow about 30 min (official)
- Best for
- Big views, low effort · clear-day caldera panorama
Short walk for long views toward the Tweed caldera and Mount Warning (Wollumbin) on a clear day. Cooler and cloudier than lower canyon stops — sometimes the lookout is pure fog, and the walk-in through cool rainforest is still worth it.
Walk details →Goomoolahra Falls
- Distance
- Official lookout track 200 m return (other signed spurs vary)
- Time
- 20–45 min at the picnic node
- Best for
- Named falls · picnic stop · mixed fitness pause
Popular named stop and picnic node toward the end of the Springbrook Road system. Short lookouts and optional short tracks — confirm current access and exact distances on QPWS materials. Ideal mixed-fitness pause between longer walks or drives.
Walk details →Cougal Cascades
- Distance
- 1.6 km return
- Time
- Allow about 1 hour (official)
- Best for
- Families · picnic + short rainforest walk · Currumbin Valley
Short formed walk from the Mount Cougal / Cougal Cascades picnic area beside Currumbin Creek to cascade viewpoints. Includes interest in historic bush sawmill remains via self-guiding signs. Separate park section from the Springbrook plateau — own drive via Currumbin Valley.
Walk details →Moderate · Grade 3 classics
One serious circuit is enough for most day-trippers — pick Twin Falls or Purling Brook, not both hard loops.
Purling Brook Falls
- Distance
- ~4 km circuit
- Time
- ~2 hours moving (more with photos / wet rock)
- Best for
- Classic waterfall day · one serious plateau circuit
The classic Springbrook circuit — cliff-edge rainforest and a descent toward the base of the falls when open. Often walked clockwise — confirm on-site arrows and park alerts. Cool, damp microclimate: expect steps, wet rock and a real climb out.
Walk details →Twin Falls
- Distance
- ~4 km circuit
- Time
- ~2 hours moving (2.5–3 hrs if you linger)
- Best for
- Rainforest + multiple falls · enclosed green tunnel
A favourite full-sense rainforest loop: waterfalls, rock overhangs and creek atmosphere. Expect spray and wet rock near the cascades. About 4 km and two hours moving time — linger longer if you shoot photos in the green tunnel.

FAQ
Common walk questions
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk at Springbrook?
Most first-timers pick one plateau Grade 3 circuit — Twin Falls or Purling Brook — or a short lookout day (Best of All / Goomoolahra) if fitness is mixed. Natural Bridge is a different drive for the arch and optional night glow worms. Verify status on Queensland Parks.
Can I do plateau waterfalls and Natural Bridge in one day?
Only as a long dual-drive day with an early start. They do not share a car park. Overnight nearby is kinder if night glow worms are also on the plan.
Is Warrie Circuit good for beginners?
No. Warrie is a full-day harder circuit for experienced walkers. Walk Twin Falls or Purling Brook first.
Are the Grade 3 circuits OK after rain?
Flow is often better and grip is worse. Slow down or switch to lookouts if stairs are continuous slime. Re-check alerts after storms.
Do we need hiking boots?
Grip matters more than boot height. Wet timber and leaf litter punish fashion runners even on “short” lookouts.
